Interior design is like an art form, so there really are no hard and fast rules about what you can and can’t do. There are, however, some classic design strategies that work and are a great place to start any decorating project. At Value Blinds & Heirloom Draperies serving the DC area, our design professionals and window treatment consultants can help you with your room makeover. Take a look at these ideas to get you started on your next room makeover:

Area Rugs

If you want to add some color to a room, area rugs alone can do the trick. How you arrange your furniture on your rug is important to the overall look of your room. There are basically three ways you can arrange furniture on your rug:

  • All on: If your rug is large enough to place all of the furniture legs on top of it, do it that way for more luxurious feel. Just be sure to leave at least 12 to 18 inches of floor surface on all four sides of the rug’s borders.
  • All off: In small rooms with smaller rugs, keep all legs off the rug. Don’t go too small with the rug, though, or it will look insignificant.
  • Front on: When the sizing of both the room and the rug is just right, put just the front feet of your furniture on the rug. This will tie everything together and define the space.

Focal Point

The focal point of your room can help you select auxiliary design elements. Your focal point might be dramatic custom drapes in a dining room, a mantel and art piece in the living room, or a custom upholstered headboard in the bedroom. Whatever you want to draw the most attention is a great place to anchor your entire room makeover design. If you’re making over more than one room, consider arranging your focal points in lines of sight from one room to the next.

Windows and Walls

Your walls likely make up the biggest part of your room, so it’s natural to focus there first. Don’t forget about how the natural light in your room can have a big impact on how your finished walls look. Before you start painting or wallpapering, choose your window treatments so you know how diffused light will enter the room at different parts of the day. There are thousands of paint colors with various tints, tones, and shades.

Artwork

Take a tip from museums and galleries when it comes to hanging your artwork. The average human eye level is 57 inches off the floor, so start there. Even in rooms with really high ceilings, keep your artwork at eye level to create a room tailored to the people in it. Here’s a great tip: If you’re not sure, take a picture. It’s remarkable how much a photo can reveal. Print it out or use an app to draw on the photo. This can give you a sense of whether a larger or smaller piece of art is needed or a tall plant might be best to fill a vacant spot.
